How much does PR cost in India? What you’re really paying for

Ask five PR agencies in India for a quote and you may get five very different numbers. That doesn’t always mean someone is overcharging. Usually they’re quoting for different work.
Here’s what actually drives the price, so you can compare quotes properly.
Retainer or project?
Most PR work is priced in one of two ways.
- Monthly retainer: an ongoing fee for continuous work, such as regular pitching, content, founder PR and reporting. This suits brands that want steady visibility.
- Project fee: a one-off price for a defined job, like a product launch, a press conference or a single press release with distribution.
A retainer usually costs more in total but gives you consistency. Journalists start to recognise your name only after repeated, relevant pitches.
Earned and paid are priced differently
This is the biggest source of confusion. Earned coverage is decided by journalists, so you pay for the agency’s time and skill, not for the article. Paid placements, such as sponsored articles or advertorials, have a price set by the publication, often on top of the agency fee.
When a quote promises “guaranteed coverage in national dailies”, it almost always means paid placements. That’s fine if you know it. Ask for every line to be marked earned or paid.
What else changes the price
- Scope: one press release a month is very different from weekly outreach across national, regional and trade media.
- Languages: Hindi and regional language releases and pitching add work.
- Seniority: who actually writes and pitches. Senior people cost more and usually get better results.
- Events: press conferences involve invites, kits and staff on the day.
- Distribution: wire services charge their own fees.
- Add-ons: social media, influencer campaigns, SEO and content are often priced separately.
What a good quote includes
A clear PR proposal should tell you:
- What will be delivered each month
- Which types of media will be pitched
- What’s earned and what’s paid
- What’s excluded (distribution fees, travel, creator fees)
- How results will be reported
- Contract length and notice period
If a quote is just a single number and the word “PR”, ask for the breakdown.
How to think about value
The cheapest option often means mass emails to a generic list. The most expensive isn’t automatically better. The useful question is: what coverage, in which publications, would actually help my business, and is this plan likely to get it?
